Conduct a written article summary on substance abuse

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Department of Social Work Savannah, Georgia WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 GUIDELINES SOWK 2200: HUMAN NEEDS AND HUMAN SERVICES SPRING 2024 Assignment General Instructions and Article Students are required to identify and prepare a written article summary associated with a human needs topic/problem (chosen from the list). The student is expected to select an article dated between 2015-present from a peer-review journal. The article should have a cover page, page numbers, and reference page. Students should refer to their notes from the class visit to the library regarding research. The article must be submitted online by the due date to receive credit. Assigned Topics The instructor will assign topics in the group section of D2L. Although you might be assigned the same topic, it is expected that you will provide your own article and writeup as this is an individual assignment. Writing Laboratory In addition, working in tandem with the writing laboratory will give the student an opportunity to assess/scrutinize his/her written work that will ultimately result in earning a satisfactory grade. Therefore, in order to earn the total points for this portion of the assignment, the student must verify that contact has been made with a writing tutor. Two options are available: • Option One – CSSR English/Writing Tutor: Visit a(n) English/Writing tutor in the Learning Commons Center – Tutorial Services [Center for Student Success and Retention (CSSR)] and receive written feedback on the writing draft. I recommend scheduling an appointment with the tutor for 30 minutes to one hour to discuss your paper. The “Writing Laboratory Process – CSSR English/Writing Tutor” document, which is located on D2L under this assignment tab, must be signed by the tutor, which verifies that you attended a writing session with the tutor. Also, the tutor should notate at least two areas of improvement that was focused on throughout the paper. The social work student should strongly encourage and reemphasize, to the tutor, that writing comments on the paper is essential to the client as the student will have to submit the form and the marked paper as electronic copies by the appropriate deadline in order to receive full credit for the Writing Laboratory category. 1 Information about the Tutoring Lab can be found at https://www.savannahstate.edu/cssr/tutorialservices.shtml. • Option Two – Smarthinking: The student can submit their writing draft online to a writing feedback platform called Smarthinking. The student must select various improvement areas that the student wants the writing tutor to provide feedback on in the writing paper. The outcome of this process will be the writing draft with feedback notes based upon the requested focus areas. It is recommended that the writing draft is submitted least two weeks in advance of the deadline so the feedback report is returned in time for online submission. Failure to do so may hinder feedback from a Smarthinking tutor. In order to receive full credit for the Writing Laboratory category, the student will have to submit the original writing draft that was submitted to the Smarthinking platform and the writing draft with feedback notes by the appropriate deadline. To access the Smarthinking software, click the “Smarthinking 2” link in the upper left hand corner of D2L. Plagiarism Last, the final version of the paper must reflect 25% or less in plagiarized work based on the report provided by Turnitin. Deadline and Evaluation This assignment is worth 100 points of your overall grade. All items of this assignment must be submitted in one file (per submission) in the appropriate Dropbox on Desire2Learn (D2L) by the due date posted in D2L. The one file must be in the following order: final paper, Writing Laboratory Process documentation (Feedback Form and Marked Paper Draft)*, and article/policy). Failure to submit the assignment accordingly will result in a failing grade for this assignment. Scholars may find that the process of writing the assignment is a major part of the cultural learning experience. Helpful Submission Information I know some students will take pictures of the documents and wonder how to combine the documents. Students can use the following link to convert pictures to PDF (portal document files): https://jpg2pdf.com/. I recommend converting all files to the PDF format before combining all documents into one file. To combine these items, students can use the same link above, but use the “Combine PDF” tab. *If a student chose option one (SSU CSSR Tutor), then the student’s feedback form is online and must be filled out by the tutor. This form must be on top of the market paper draft. If a student chose option two 3 (Smarthinking- in D2L), then the student’s feedback will be intertwined in the marked report; therefore, submit the report delivered from Smarthinking.
