  2. AVA (Student 1) The Vote: Part One, is based on the events of the 19th Amendment. This film tells the story of the campaign taken up by American women, and the fight for the right to vote. This would result in a large expansion of voting rights in United States history. Millions of women wanted to participate in the American government and secure the right to vote. In the film, Michael Waldman states: “The right to vote is the heart of democracy, and if half the country doesn’t have the right to vote, you’re nowhere near being a democracy.” This fight for women’s right to vote began at the same time the Civil War was being resolved, so America was already in a frenzy with the amount of events taking place within the country. Within the film, Alexander Keyssar tells us, “The right to vote is fundamental. It’s a key ingredient in letting people have equal voice and equal power. It gives you a way to protect yourself.” The woman that the film mentioned was Alice Paul. The narrator of the film interested me when she tells us that Paul had no intention of joining the fight for woman suffrage. She had enrolled in a graduate economics class at the University of Birmingham and was the first woman to ever do so. She just wanted to see what the world had to offer. While in England, she went to a lecture, where the speaker spoke down on women saying that they shouldn’t have a voice. After she left England, she decided she wanted to “publicize the need for a federal women’s suffrage amendment.” () Eventually, Alice Paul would organize marches, protests at the White House, and rallies with her fellow suffragettes. She was put in prison multiple times before the 19th Amendment. P”aul and the National Women’s Party focused on the Equal rights Amendment to guarantee women constitutional protection from discrimination.” () Something I learned from this module was that one of the reasons that it took so much longer for women to gain the right to vote in America was because their cause started at the same time that the Civil War was resolving, and the men of America couldn’t grasp the idea of African Americans and women gaining the right to vote at the same time.

Summarize Part 1

Part one of the video “The Vote” is about women’s suffrage and more depth of it’s origins than what an average history class may provide in high school. The video delves into the campaign women created from different classes and positions to gain the right to vote. The main objective of the campaign was that democracy is not complete if half of the country is unable to vote. Women wanted to have a voice and participate in government, which is very challenging when they do not have the right to do so. The fight for women’s suffrage did not exclude women of color either, women of all ethnicity and races wanted the right to vote in the United States. Ida Wells-Barnett (a woman mentioned in the video) states at the time that many black people were being lynched after the civil war, “With no sacredness of the ballot, there is no sacredness of human life…” which holds true. After black men gained the right to vote over a hundred of them were lynched and segregation laws were beginning to be implemented.

  1. The person I chose to discuss from this film is a woman by the name of Harriot Stanton Blatch. She was Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s granddaughter! The premise of her campaign in simple terms was that she wanted women of all ethnics and backgrounds to have suffrage. The only old fashioned mindset that she contained from this was prohibiting black women- but we know that they were included ultimately when women did gain suffrage. Blatch was a powerhouse in New York after returning to the United States from Europe in 1902 after seeing how the U.S. was trying to maintain 19th century values.
