BIO 130 – Food Label Project – Due by 2/18/24 This project is intended to help you become a better educated consumer. Compare two food items (packaged, canned or natural/ raw) that are made of similar nutritional ingredients (one is processed; the other is less processed or made from a whole food). You may go online to download nutritional labels. Examples: two cereal boxes, two canned meats or fish, one frozen or canned vs raw fruit/ vegetables, white rice vs brown rice, natural nut butter with processed nut butter, whole grain bread vs white bread, burger meat vs low-fat meats, candy bar vs protein bar or energy bar, etc. • Please attach pictures of food labels being compared – PROJECT cannot be graded without them!! • Food items must be comparable (same kind): Please discuss them with me before you start your work if you are unsure PREP WORK: Parts A, B, & C – Make a table comparing the following information (45 points) A-Nutritional values: (30 pts) -Serving size – How many servings per container? -Total calories – Calories from fats – Type of fats (saturated fats, Trans fats, cholesterol) – Calories from carbohydrates – Amount of fiber & amount of sugars – Calories from protein -Salt (sodium) content – Micronutrients listed (Vitamins & Minerals) B-Ingredients: Please look for (if any is present) (10 pts) -Identify hidden Tran’s fats if any (example shortenings, hydrogenated oils) -Identify hidden or added sugar if any (example: corn syrup, fructose, can sugar) -Added chemicals (list up to five- if present) -Added vitamins and minerals (fortified or enriched) C-Food Allergy Claims: Please list any & all allergy claims (5 pts ANALYSIS SECTION: Answer all parts for full credit (55 points) 1-Compare each serving size of the two food items: (20 pts) (You may bullet this information) -Which one (serving) is higher in total calories? -Which serving is higher in fat and include the type of fat? -Which serving is higher in Saturated fat? -Which serving is higher in sugar? -Which serving is higher in fiber? -Which serving is higher in salt? -Which serving is higher in Tran’s fats? -Which serving is higher in protein? 2-Does any of the foods have a structural or functional claim?
