ASSIGNMENT #1 GUIDED REFLECTION PAPER This assignment has two parts. 1. First, you will write a 3-4 page reflection paper exploring the conceptions of freedom we have investigated so far in Constant and Hobbes. This is a guided paper, meaning it has a specific structure for you to follow (see below). The purpose of this assignment is to cultivate your ability to: interpret texts, evaluate their arguments, communicate your understanding to others, and connect that understanding to issues in contemporary political life. In subsequent assignments, you will use these skills to write longer interpretive and evaluative papers. 2. Second, along with your reflection paper you will write a 1-2 paragraph self-assessment of your work process. This is an exercise in meta-cognition. I want you to think about and then describe how you went about completing the assignment. e.g. Where did you work? Was the environment distracting? Did you discuss your work with anyone? Did you come to office hours? I also want you to then formulate at least one thing you could improve on in your work process. How might you make yourself more efficient in the future? (Note: The self-assessment does not count towards the 3-4 page requirement for the reflection paper.) STRUCTURAL & FORMAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Your reflection paper must be between 3-4 pages double spaced, 12 pt. font. 2. Your paper should have all of the elements contained in the template outline below. You don’t need to follow the paragraph suggestions (these are just a guide), but you do need to write a paper that contains all the structural elements in the template. 3. Write your paper in first person (e.g. “I argue,” “In my view,” “ I think,” etc.) 4. When using terminology (freedom, liberty, autonomy, etc.) use our terms from the course, not the thinker you’re reading. If you are quoting a thinker and then using different language than they do, say something like ‘I refer to what Constant calls Ancient liberty, as collective autonomy’. 5. You must cite both thinkers (Constant and Hobbes) at least one time. When quoting thinkers, you don’t need to take full sentences or paragraphs. You can ‘cut up’ quotes – excerpting only the words or clauses you think are more relevant. You can also introduced longer ‘block’ quotes (3 lines or more). If using such quotes, you indent and single space. 6. When citing the text, you must use footnotes.1 1 Like this. 7. As is specified in the template, your reflection paper needs an evaluative argument. Pick one model of freedom that you find most interesting and tell me what its strengths and weaknesses are. 8. As is specified in the template, your paper must connect its evaluative argument to some issue in contemporary political life. Use this example as a way to further your argument. 9. Your paper must have a clear thesis statement! This should be in the introductory paragraph. It can even be the first sentence of the paper. After reading the first paragraph of your paper, the reader must have a very clear understanding of what you’re going to argue (claim) and why (argument). A thesis comes in the form: “I argue X because Y”. The “X” is your claim (the what) and the “Y” is your argument (the reason why others should agree with your claim). TEMPLATE INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH: “In this paper I explain Benjamin Constant’s bifurcation of freedom into Ancient and Modern varieties. I then categorize Thomas Hobbes’ view as fitting into one of these two. To explore which conception of freedom is most valuable, I connect [one of these views of freedom] to contemporary political life in the case of [plug in your example]. Ultimately, I argue that [one of these views of freedom] should be our central focus/does us a disservice in contemporary political life, because XYZ]” [Note: the portion in red is the thesis statement. How would Constant categorize him? Offer quotation(s) to Leviathan and explain them to the reader. 2-6 PARAGRAPHS: Pick one of these views of freedom that you have analyzed to focus on further. Evaluate its advantages and disadvantages. E.g. “The main strength of Hobbes’ account of freedom is that it allows us to XYZ”. “At the same time, his account is limited in that it does not adequately ABC”. TIP: This is the normative (evaluative) portion of your paper. Be conscious of the fact that when you are arguing about values (rather than just interpreting the text) it is not enough to simply assert that one view is correct. Saying that “Hobbes’ conception of freedom is wrong” is not an argument. Saying that “Hobbes’ conception of freedom is wrong because XYZ REASONS” and then explaining those reasons with examples and details is an argument. When writing this section, continually ask yourself ‘Why? Why should the reader agree with me?’ If you don’t have an answer to that question on the page, then you haven’t yet adequately argued in defense of your point of view. [1-3 PARAGRAPHS:] Part of the evaluative analysis (you choose how much) must be devoted to example(s) that connect the model you’re studying to contemporary political life to help underscore your point about its strengths or limits (depending on which you want to emphasize more). For example, it helps to explains why many Americans were skeptical of the so called individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act. Hobbes, like many Americans, would have felt this to be a restriction on our freedom because _____. This is a helpful/misleading/partial way to think about freedom as it ___” CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH: Briefly restate all the views of freedom you’ve analyzed. Remind us which you focused on. Explain in a sentence its main strength or limitation.
