IT 353 Information Defense Technologies Spring 2024 Homework 2 – version 1.0 The objective of this assignment is: ? To compare and contrast an event discussed in Lecture 4 with other similar events. The estimated time required for this assignment for a typical student is 60 – 90 minutes. The time required for each individual student will vary according to that student’s abilities, work practices and familiarity with the subject matter. Preparing Your Submission For this assignment you will create a Microsoft® Word document file (or a file in a format that is compatible with Word). The file extension must be “.doc”, “.docx” (as shown below), “.odt”, or “.rtf”. WARNING: Do not simply change a file extension – create the file correctly. Any assignment submitted in a format other than as described above will not be graded. The name of your file must be “IT-353-202410-section-HW2-userid.ext”, where section is section in which you are enrolled (001, DL1, DL2, or DL3), userid is your Mason NetID (as used to log into Blackboard), and ext is the file extension (see above for allowed extensions), e.g. “IT-353-202410-001-HW2-jjones9.docx”. Use of the correct filename is essential to ensure your file is handled correctly during grading. Failure to use the correct filename will result in a 1-point deduction in the score. Format your document with 1-inch margins on all sides. Use 12-point Times New Roman or a similar font if that is not available to you. Use single-line spacing, with one blank line between paragraphs. Failure to format the document as directed will result in a 1-point deduction in the score. Include the following at the beginning of your document: ? Your full name. ? Your Mason G Number. ? The course number (IT 353) and section number (001, DL1, DL2, or DL2). ? The semester (Spring 2024). ? The assignment title (Homework 2). Show these elements as text in the body of your document, or in a first-page-only header – not in a header that is repeated on each page. Failure to provide the required elements as directed will be penalized by a deduction in the score. Copyright © 2024 Michael X. Lyons. All rights reserved. Page 1 of 6 Important Notices This is an individual assignment – it is not to be completed in groups or teams of students. If you receive assistance from any person (including the Instructor or the Teaching Assistant) in preparing and/or completing this assignment, other than these directions and any instructions given in class or in Blackboard, you must acknowledge that assistance – to do so, add a paragraph after the final question below, name the person who assisted you, and describe the assistance given. Failure to acknowledge assistance is a violation of the Honor Code. WARNING: Do not restate the question before providing an answer in your document. Restating the questions will cause a high percentage match figure in SafeAssign and create unnecessary work for the faculty grading your assignment. Restating the questions will be penalized by a deduction in the score. Answer each of the following questions entirely your own words – do not quote in any way from any source except where specifically directed to do so. Quoting from any source, even in part, except as directed will result in a score of zero for this answer and may be referred to the Honor Committee. WARNING: Changing a few words in a quotation is not using your own words – it is an attempt to cheat and will be referred to the Honor Committee. If a question asks you to give one (1) example then you must give exactly one. If you give more than one example for an answer you will receive zero credit for that answer. An appropriate source would be an article from a well-known national or international news organization. a. Show the URL for your source as a hyperlink. The hyperlink must open the webpage for the source when clicked. Note: For this assignment is it not necessary to cite the article nor to identify it in a “Works Cited” section. (2 points) b. State the city and state where the event occurred. You may show a 2-character abbreviation for the state. It is not necessary to quote or cite the source for this answer. (1 point) c. State the date on which the event occurred. (1 point) d. Using only your own words, explain three (3) ways in which the “Bronze Night” and the event in the U.S. are similar. Note: Trivial similarities will receive no credit. You should be able to find important similarities based on the discussion we had in the lecture. (3 points) e. Explain one (1) request the Estonian government made to an international organization for a response that is best classified under the “I” element of the “DIME” acronym. Use your own words, but you may quote sparingly to identify specific titles, etc. (1 point) b. Explain one (1) request the Estonian government made to an international organization for a response that is best classified under another element (not “I”) of the “DIME” acronym. Use your own words, but you may quote sparingly to identify specific titles, etc. State the “DIME” element that you believe is most appropriate to classify the request. (2 points) c. The hyperlink must open the webpage for the source when clicked. Note: For this assignment is it not necessary to cite the article nor to identify it in a “Works Cited” section. (1 point) b. In both events institutions of a particular type were especially targeted. State the type of institution and in your own words explain the most likely reason why they were especially targeted. Spelling, grammar, clarity of expression, visual quality and clear, concise, effective communication are important aspects of your written work. The quality of your submission will be evaluated in addition to the content you produce. Do NOT write in a fixed-width font (e.g. Courier New) as it makes regular text hard to read. Use of a fixed-width font for regular text, will be penalized by a deduction in the score. Include the following statement as your answer to this question: I understand that the quality of my work will be one of the factors assessed for this assignment. (Points will be deducted for poor quality work. 5 points will be deducted if this statement is not included.) Copyright © 2024 Michael X. Lyons. All rights reserved.
